Common Issues

A mild to moderate pain often described as feeling like a tight band around the head.

Multiple factors can bring on a tension headache, including stress, inadequate sleep, and poor posture.

The main symptom is pain on both sides of the head that may be associated with muscle pain.

Treatments include pain relievers and other medications. Stress reduction, ice or heat on sore muscles, and good posture also may help.

A chronic muscular pain disorder.

Myofascial pain syndrome is a disorder in which pressure on sensitive points in the muscles causes pain in seemingly unrelated body parts. The syndrome often happens after repeated injury or muscle overuse.

Symptoms include persistent pain or a tender muscle knot.

Treatments include physical therapy, medications to relieve pain, local needling or injections, and relaxation techniques.

A rare condition in which the neck muscles contract, causing the head to twist to one side.

Torticollis can be inherited and is seen soon after birth. This form may resolve without treatment.

The most common type causes the chin to pull toward the shoulder. Symptoms include a limited range of head motion, headache, or neck pain.

Injecting botulinum toxin into the affected muscles often reduces the symptoms of torticollis. Physical therapy or surgery also may be needed.

Tendinitis – inflammation of a tendon
Tendinosis – is degeneration of a tendon
Tenosynovitis – inflammation of the synovial sheath surrounding the tendon.

Widespread muscle pain and tenderness.

Fibromyalgia is often accompanied by fatigue and altered sleep, memory, and mood. Widespread muscle pain and tenderness are the most common symptoms. Medications, talk therapy, and stress reduction may help control symptoms.

Pain caused by overuse along the shinbone, the large front bone in the lower leg.

Shin splints result when muscles, tendons, and bone tissue become overworked.

Shin splints often occur in athletes who’ve recently intensified or changed their training routines.

The main symptom is pain in the leg. Treatment includes rest, ice, and pain relievers.

A stretching or tearing of a muscle or a tissue connecting muscle to bone (tendon).

Strains often occur in the lower back and in the muscle in the back of the thigh.

Symptoms include pain, swelling, muscle spasms, and limited ability to move the muscle.

Treatment may include pain relievers, ice, or splinting.

A headache of varying intensity, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine headaches are sometimes preceded by warning symptoms. Triggers include hormonal changes, certain foods and drinks, stress, and exercise. Migraine headaches can cause throbbing in one particular area that can vary in intensity. Nausea and sensitivity to light and sound are also common symptoms.

A condition which refers to a problem with a rubbery disc between the spinal bones.

This condition occurs when the soft center of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior casing.

Some herniated discs cause no symptoms. Others can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg.

A disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of nerves. In MS, resulting nerve damage disrupts communication between the brain and the body. Multiple sclerosis causes many different symptoms, including vision loss, pain, fatigue, and impaired coordination. The symptoms, severity, and duration can vary from person to person. Some people may be symptom free most of their lives, while others can have severe chronic symptoms that never go away.

Pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, which runs down one or both legs from the lower back. It’s usually caused when a herniated disk or bone spur in the spine presses on the nerve. Pain originates in the spine and radiates down the back of the leg. Sciatica typically affects only one side of the body.

A disorder in which the piriformis muscle in the buttocks irritates the sciatic nerve.

Piriformis syndrome is a disorder of a narrow muscle located in the buttocks.

Symptoms include pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttocks and down the leg, which may worsen after sitting for a long time, climbing stairs, walking, or running.

Treatments include stretching exercises, massage, anti-inflammatory drugs, or surgery.

A group of disorders that occur when certain blood vessels or nerves are compressed.

Thoracic outlet syndrome affects the space between the collarbone and first rib (thoracic outlet). Common causes include trauma, repetitive injuries, pregnancy, and anatomical defects, such as having an extra rib.

Symptoms include pain in the shoulders and neck and numbness, weakness, and coldness in the fingers. Treatment involves physical therapy and pain relief

Inflammation of the fluid-filled pads (bursae) that act as cushions at the joints.

Bursitis occurs most often at joints that perform frequent repetitive motion.

Symptoms include pain, swelling, and stiffness. Common areas include the knees,

shoulders, elbows, and hips. Treatment includes rest, ice, and pain relievers.

A sideways curvature of the spine. Scoliosis occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. Most cases are mild with few symptoms. Some children develop spine deformities that get more severe as they grow. Severe scoliosis can be painful and disabling.

A general term for age-related wear and tear of the spinal disks.

Spondylosis is common and worsens with age. This condition is often used to describe degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) of the spine.

Most people don’t have symptoms, but some may experience pain or muscle spasms

A stretching or tearing of ligaments, the fibrous tissue that connects bones and joints.
